It’s not long before we’re back on the road with the radio blasting, with Diego and his brother in the back seat talking and joking like brothers again. Life is inching its way towards normalcy.
After we drop Juan and Diego off at their home, I’m filled with such an overwhelming feeling of happiness that I don’t want to spoil it with whatever serious subject Creole has written in the furrows of his brow. Ever since we left that abandoned store, he’s been brooding. No, now is the time for a distraction.
I turn to him. I put on the kind of smile I’d use on my dad when I wanted to spend one more hour at the beach instead of doing my homework.
“How would you like to go surfing? I know a great beach that’s almost always quiet.”
“I’ve never surfed a day in my life, love. And today doesn’t seem like the best day to start.”
I’m not taking ‘no’ for an answer.
I want to get closer to him.
“You look like you have so much on your mind. You’ve been through a lot and you’ve done so much to help me already. Come on, the least I can do is help you relax. Surfing always helps me refocus when I’m having trouble and I promise, with just a little bit of time, I can have you surfing like a pro. There’s no need to be scared.”
“You’re wicked, you know that?”
“I’m just looking out for your mental health. I do this professionally, remember.”
We stop by my home on the way to the beach to pick up my surfboard and wetsuit and our next stop after that is a surf shop by my favorite beach here in San Diego to pick up some gear for Creole. He’s quiet and attentive as I help him pick out a good beginner’s board and a wetsuit. We get to the beach and take turns changing in the SUV. He pretends not to notice as I check out how well he fills out his wetsuit. Front and back, he’s more than enough to make me stare.
“You ready?” He says, grinning as if he knows every thought that’s racing through my head.
I blush at the idea that he knows even a fraction of what I’m thinking. “I am. Come on, lets get out there. The waves are perfect right now.”
Under the early afternoon sun, we walk out into the sea. He’s tentative at first, and it’s surprising to see a man like him be unsure of himself, but he isn’t afraid to listen to me as I teach him the basics: how to paddle on the board, how to take off, and other fundamental turns and maneuvers.
He’s a quick learner. He’s not ashamed to fall, even with people watching. And, after a time, he’s sharing the joy I feel when I’m out on the water. I’m happy, I’m free, I’m doing something that connects me to the people that I love the most.
